Crystal - Amethyst

Amethyst

Amethyst was covered briefly in the blog about Prasiolite. Amethyst is probably more well known and is widely available and it has its own wonderful properties..

Amethyst is found almost everywhere and the purple colour - which can range from soft lilac hues to deep rich violet is due to the presence of manganese and iron deposits.

Amethyst is a popular stone and has been for many many years. The name is said to come from the Greek word 'ametusthos' meaning 'not intoxicated'. This may be one of the reasons that amethyst was well known for preventing drunkenness and overindulgence. Ancient Greeks decorated their drinking vessels with amethyst as a way of being able to drink a vast quantity of alcohol and not suffer any effects.

A stone of protection and of connection to the divine, Amethyst has been used by many cultures for many different things - the ancient Egyptians listed it in the book of the dead to be carved into heart shaped amulets for burial. Eastern cultures used it in their temples for worship, it was also beneficial for aligning planetary and astrological influences. Catholic Priests wore it as a protection from mystical intoxication, keeping their thoughts spiritual where they felt they should be.

Today, it is still a stone of contentment and spirituality. It can clear the aura of negative energies by forming a protective shield around the body.

Connected to the third eye and crown chakras, Amethyst is wonderful for working with your intuition and psychic abilities. It's also beneficial in working with your inner creativeness - allowing new ideas and projects to grow. It helps you focus, to bring about success is your endeavours.

Amethyst has many properties to assist with physical healing and spiritual energy -
Physically it can work with your immune system, helping such ailments as bruising, pain and swellings. It can assist with tinnitus and other hearing problems, as well as dealing with insomnia as a result of an overactive mind. It's calming effect reduces stress and worry.
Spiritually it has a high vibrational energy and is valuable in stillness and meditation with a view to connecting to the divine, allowing the higher mind to be open to the insights, wisdom and guidance that are offered.

Amethyst is a transformer crystal. This allows us to work within ourselves to enhance or change our lives, be it to learn a new craft or project, grow spiritually or stronger or to generally feel that we need to be a better person. By transforming ourselves, we can therefore transform our lives for the better and the good.
