Proper Name: Myristica Fragrans
Folk Names: Qoust, Sadhika, Wohpala, Bicuiba Acu
Gender: Masculine
Planet: Jupiter
Element: Fire
Deities: Ochun, Oya Lugh, Danu and Cerridwen
Powers: Luck, Money, Health and Fidelity.

Magical Uses:
Nutmeg was carried as a luck charm and strung with star anise and tonka beans for a very potent herbal necklace. Nutmegs are generally carried to ward off rheumatism, cold sores, neuralgia, boils and sties. Sprinkle nutmeg onto green candles to bring wealth and you can also offer in ceremony for fidelity.

Burn nutmeg for prosperity, luck, psychic awareness, fortune clairvoyance, divination, justice and is wonderful to burn while you meditate. Add ground nutmeg to your candle wax when making candles to burn for prosperity rituals. A spell to insure your beloved's faithfulness is to take a nutmeg and cut it into four equal parts. Bury the first part in the Earth; throw the second one into the air from a cliff or a hill, burn the third section, and then boil the last quarter piece in water and drink either mixed with your favourite tea, or on its own. Some say when this process is followed your beloved will not fall to another’s temptations.

Often associated with Samhain and Yule, nutmeg is also one of the traditional spices used in the Jewish ritual farewell to the feminine aspect of God on Saturday evening, when warm spices are sniffed to remind us that Her presence should permeate the week, like the sweet smell of a spice permeates the air.

Pumpkin Bread

This is a great old Maine recipe, moist and spicy. The bread actually tastes better the day after it is baked. Great for holiday gift giving!

Ingredients:

1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
4 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup water
3 cups white sugar
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. Baking soda
1 ½ tsp. Salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
½ tsp. ground cloves
¼ tsp. ground ginger

Prep time 15 minutes/ Cook time 50 minutes/ Ready in 1.5 hours

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 7x3” loaf pans.

In a large bowl, mix together pumpkin puree, eggs, oil, water and sugar until well blended. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger. Stir the dry ingredients into the pumpkin mixture until just blended. Pour into the prepared pans.

Bake for about 50 minutes in the preheated oven. Loaves are done when toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean.

Enjoy!
