Lilac by Unity

Lilac by Unity

Syringa vulgaris

One of the prettiest and most fragrant of all the plants blooming at this time of year, and a personal favourite of mine, is the Lilac.

A large deciduous shrub or small tree of the Olive family. Native to the Balkan peninsula and naturalized in parts of Europe and North America. It blooms in early Summer and the flowers can be either white, red or a pinky/ pale violet colour.

When I was a child we had three Lilac tree's in our garden and being one of three children we each chose our own which became our base camps and all sorts of other things, we spent many hours playing under or climbing our special tree. Even today, many years later, the scent of them still brings me back to those happy carefree days of childhood.

Magically Lilac can be used in spells and rituals for protection, exorcism, love and meditation.

Ruling planet: Venus
Element: water
Gender: Feminine

Use Lilac fowers or incense as an offering to Venus.

Add the petals to a spell bag to attract love or protection.

Burn a pink candle coated with Lilac oil to attract love into your life.

The fresh flowers can be placed in or around a property for protection from negative energies.

Add dried Lilac blossom to incense to enhance your meditations and visualizations.

In the past Lilacs were planted around homes to protect from evil spirits, but it was considered unlucky to bring the white flowers into the home as like many white flowers they were associated with death.

It was believed by some that a Lilac growing in your garden would encourage devas.
