Unity's Summer fiction book review
With the
Summer holidays upon us I thought I'd put together a list of easy read books
that I've enjoyed reading lately as suggestions for anyone with similar tastes.
I enjoy reading mainly urban fantasy/ paranormal books so I apologise if none
of these books appeal to you, if you want to add any suggestions of your own
please add them to the comments below. I've kept to the Kindle version of each
book as that’s what I use for most of the fiction I read (I’d need a bigger
house if I only brought proper books!) They should all be available in book
form if you prefer.
Imp Series books by Debra Dunbar
Samantha
Martin is an imp who is taking an extended holiday from Hel. All she wants to
do is drink beer by the pool and play mischievous pranks on humans and get her
hot neighbour in the sack. She loves her life on Earth but must be careful that
she doesn't attract the attention of any Angels who won’t hesitate to execute
her. The books cover the adventures and troubles that Sam gets into with
various friends and others from the supernatural world. Debra Dunbar has
created a laugh out loud funny and highly entertaining series that I had
trouble putting down. The first book - A Demon Bound is free on Amazon Kindle
at the moment if you want to give it a try, you can also buy the set of the
first 3 books or the whole set of 8 which I've only just discovered! There are
also separate books about the adventures of some of the other characters.
Any Witch Way you can (Wicked Witches of the Midwest series) - Amanda M Lee
This is a
series of 10 full books and 12 short stories. This first story focuses on Bay
Winchester a reporter who is a witch and lives with her two cousins, Mother,
two aunts and feisty Great - aunt in a family run Guest house in the small town
of Hemlock Cove. They seem to get into an awful lot of scrapes including
solving murders which happen with alarming regularity for a small town. Having
said that they are an easy holiday read which is very well wrote. The
characters are all very likable, especially Great- aunt Tilly. If cosy
mysteries are your sort of thing, give it a try. At the moment, it's £1.49 on
kindle and a light fun read perfect for your holiday.
Grim Tidings (Aisling Grimlock book 1)
Again, by Amanda M Lee (and probably my favourite and funniest).
After being
laid off from her job, Aisling has no choice but to join the family business
with her Dad and 4 brothers as a Grim Reaper collecting and transferring souls
to the afterlife. This book is completely different from the bog standard urban
fantasy book with just the right amount of action, scariness, romance and
sarcasm. It had plenty of laugh out loud moments and I am completely hooked on
the series. There are 6 books so far and I’m really hoping there will be more.
Grim Tidings is £1.49 on Amazon at the moment.
Amanda M Lee
has written a few other series but the two above are my favourites.
Moon Called: Mercy Thompson book 1 by Patricia Briggs
Mercedes
Thompson runs a garage in the Tri-Cities. She's a mechanic who spends her spare
time karate training and her next-door neighbour is the Alpha of the local
Werewolf pack. She is tolerated by the wolves as she is a shapeshifter coyote.
Mercy is a feisty kickass heroine; the books are well written and packed full
of action and adventure. The characters are likable and down to earth and
include vampires and an assortment of fey. There are 10 books in the series and
another series (Alpha and Omega) set in the same world but on a slightly
earlier time line. Book 1, Moon Called is £3.99 on Kindle at the moment.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone - Laini Taylor
This is the
first book in a trilogy that is aimed at young adults, but the story is
incredible and beautifully wrote. I’m a long way from a young adult and literally
couldn’t put it down until I'd finished all 3 books, I lived in a daze while
reading it and felt bereft when I'd finished it. Karou lives a double life. On
the one hand, she's a 17-year-old art student in Prague; and on the other she's
an errand-girl to a monstrous creature from another world who is the only
family she's ever had. I cannot tell you how brilliant this series is and it's
up there with a very few of my all-time favourite books. At the moment, it's
99p on Amazon kindle.
The Kate Daniels series - Ilona Andrews Book 1 - Magic Bites
The world
has suffered a magic apocalypse. We pushed the technological progress too far,
and now magic has returned. it comes in waves without warning and vanishes as
suddenly as it appears. When magic is up, planes drop out of the sky,
electricity dies and cars stall. Kate Daniels likes her sword a little too
much, and she has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood
makes her a target, and she's spent most of her life hiding in plain sight.
When her guardian is murdered she must choose to do nothing and stay safe, or
risk her life pursuing his killer. This is one of the best urban fantasies I’ve
read this year, with interesting characters and lots of action. It’s another
one that made me sad to finish. There are 15 books in the series written by
Ilona Andrews who are a husband and wife team. The first book (Magic Bites) is
£4.99 at the moment on kindle.
Nice, some new ideas here!
